Indeed, Hearn explicitly injects a lot of himself into these tales, the story Hi-Mawari is almost entirely about an experience of his and touches upon Japan only briefly. As a fan of Japanese goth, I heartily recommend Kwaidan – a quick, satisfying sampling both in written or movie version, to add spookiness to the season. This is the kind of book you can re-read in a few months and still enjoy. He created these stories from a mixture of Chinese and Japanese folklore retold over generations through both oral and literary traditions.

I truly admire Lafcadio Hearn. This is used to identify particular browsers or devices when the access the service, and is used for security reasons. He also states that one of the stories — Yuki-onna — was told to him by a farmer in Musashi Provinceand kwadian was apparently the first record of it, both by his own account and according to the research of modern folklorists. I absolutely loved this book and I can’t recommend it highly enough.
