Michael rated it really liked it May 03, It seemed these were not names but titles so I looked them up online. First we learn of the Khedive, then we hear of the Lieutenant. This brought him closer to his brother, Rudy, who died of a disease at age 10 the works of Patrick Modiano from to are dedicated to him. In this story it is a nameless 20 year old male navigating the world of two rival groups of French citizens who are doing what they must in order to survive.

The Night Watch is indeed a fiction story. Typical to Modiano’s style, a brisk and easy but very entertaining read.

What I found concerned the title “khedive”. He is quite taken with the Captain of the group, whose enigmatic comments seem to indicate that he is aware of the narrator’s criminal life. They started to argue about Dubuffet, and it was like we were watching a tennis match!
