For those looking salyor a consumable introduction to and exploration of Roman history, “Empire” is a good starting point. Indeed, it becomes implausible that the family continues to exist after close contact with so many emperors.

Saylor also writes realistic probabilities to explain some of the fables that we’ve all heard about a few of the more famous emperors.

We learn about their strengths and weaknesses through the stories of the Pinarii family and their relationships with the emperors. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in history or historical fiction, and let me tell that you will not be disappointed. This suggests that Saylor is far more highly reliant on his source material than would seem to be apparent. I found myself really anxious to get through the book.
