International Music Company The ‘Eccles Sonata’ has been linked to the double bass for almost 90 years beginning with Serge Koussevitsky’s recording of the first movement in andand the IMC edition, edited by Frederick Zimmermannand first published in The two slow movements are lyrical and sonorous, displaying the cantabile qualities of the spnata bass, and the fast ones are lively and rhythmic displaying a sonara technical command of the instrument.
Were it not for his eponymous Sonata in G minor, the name of Henry Eccles would have long ago been consigned to the history books. The piano part works with all the Crowell editions.

The Sonata in G minor is the 11th of the twelve sonatas and Groves Dictionary states that some of the movements were composed by Giuseppe Valentini and Francesco Antonio Bonporticonfirming that the ecles movement of this sonata was stolen from Xouble fourth ‘Invenzione’ Op. Current thinking is that ‘less is more’ and Tony Osborne’s accompaniment is clear, fresh, concise and idiomatic, providing a supportive accompaniment to allow the double bass part to dominate.

It is amazing that one work can keep a composer’s name alive, several centuries after his death, and how new generations of young bassists, cellists and violists are drawn to a work which was more than likely written by more than one composer.
