Unfortunately this decision had its consequences as now people felt they could do whatever they liked – such as not working or not obeying the Eldest. Thus within a few months things on board the ship were starting to fall apart.
Amy, in the meantime, was trying to piece together clues left by Orion that hinted at a some momentous secret that he had discovered and that only Amy could evaluate what to do with this information.
In addition there seemed to be a saboteur aboard the ship that was making things difficult for Elder. This added a whole new story arc to the series, and it became a little more serious. The fallout from taking everyone off Phydus is a lot of political unrest.
It brought more of a sense of seriousness to the book that was missing in the first one. There was still a lot of humor in the book, but the air of seriousness made it obvious that Amy and Elder are both maturing. I really enjoyed seeing how they were growing into their positions. There were a lot more The action that was going on throughout this story was a huge part of keeping me more involved in the story. I say this hesitantly because there were some points where I just did not like what she was doing.
But for the most part, I appreciated who she was growing into on the Godspeed. Despite the continued hostility that she has to deal with from the citizens of the Godspeed, she is still concerned with their well-being, and trying to solve the mystery that was left for her and Elder from Orien.
And I definitely liked her ability to make decisions for herself, and knowing that she didn’t need to just settle for what was right in front of her. What I Didn’t Like: Sometimes she seemed a little I had to remind myself that she was only 16 or 17 years old, and she was put in a world where no one knew or trusted her.
But her one track mind got a little tiring. I feel like Elder and Amy’s love story is supposed to be a big part of this story, but there is just nothing about Elder that makes me think, ooo, Epic Love.
Maybe it is because they don’t know what real love is, since it’s all been controlled by phydus. But the romance just didn’t hold up in A Million Suns. I’m loving this series. There are things I love, and things that I don’t, but overall, the humor and story arcs have definitely got me hooked. I’m glad that the third and final book is on the shelves and that I don’t have to wait to find out how the story of the Godspeed wraps up!
A Million Suns (Across the Universe, book 2) by Beth Revis
One person found this helpful. Ever since Across the Universe came out over a year ago, I’ve been waiting eagerly for the second book in the trilogy. A Million Suns by ,illion Revis picks up several months after the first book ends. We once again are introduced to the protagonists Elder and Amy and their continued journey through space to find another habitable planet.
Orion, the previous Elder, has been frozen, and his secrets remain for Amy and Elder to find out.
A Million Suns
He sends them through a treasure revvis and what killion find is impossible, terrible, and frightening. This book starts off with a bang. We are introduced to a world without Phydus, and people wake up and have free will for the first time in generations.
Unsurprisingly, Elder has his hands full in trying to keep people alive and healthy. Amy, at the same time, is following clues to figure out what Orion has been hiding.
This double perspective works extremely well and is necessary to follow both of these journeys. The description is lush and again, I am very impressed with Revis’ command of science fiction but firmly in a YA style that is easy to follow. The setup of everything comes at a good pace, and I was never bored but fascinated when we get more backstory into the world.
I liked how the deterioration of this very structured world came about– I thought it was well done.

That said, I have to say I was disappointed when the secrets were revealed. Perhaps, because the beginning of the book was so strong, it was difficult to live up to this expectation.
I wasn’t convinced that the secret Orion was keeping was so awful that it made sense to kill people. I also thought that Bartie could have been better developed– the way his side story resolved was a little too pat and quick although made logical sense.
Overall, I am eager to see what Revis will bring to the table for the third book. She has a lot of places she can go with the story, and she has made this world broad enough so that it makes sense for it to be told in a trilogy. Beautifully written, with great characters, this is a solid second book. See all reviews.
